Verified practical competency means that a student has been assessed by an accredited NauticEd Professional Sailing Instructor and has demonstrated a level of on-the-water practical competence to a specific listed Rank. The student is graded by the instructor to their level of demonstrated practical ability, and the NauticEd software automatically places the Verified Competency Mark on the logbook resume.
What if the Assessor determines that the student does not meet the requirements of competence for a particular competency grade? The assessor will downgrade the student to a lower level of competency and identify the weaknesses the student exhibited during the assessment, and help the student create a remediation plan. For example, if the student was going for their SLC license and Bareboat Charter Master on-water competency grade and the student did not exhibit enough strength to demonstrate competency for bareboat charter in the Mediterranean or Caribbean for example, then the assessor may assign a qualified crew competency for now with the identification of the weaknesses demonstrated. This downgrade, however, should be celebrated because the student has now realized that they have weaknesses in their boating ability - giving rise to safety issues on charter with their friends and family. These weaknesses can be fixed with further instruction by the Instructor assessor.
